An offering was taken to support Ohioans for Sustainable Change ongoing Carbon Covenant project to plant 3,000,000 trees on Kilimanjaro. This project works to rehabilitate an ecosystem ravaged by deforestation for the betterment of wildlife and the local community. The project takes place in the same area where the downtown Columbus “Capitol Square Rotary” and the Byrd Polar Research Center are working to educate local people in climate change adaptation. While Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is an iconic symbol of climate change, these two projects do little to stop climate change but rather prepare local peoples, living on the margins, for the coming changes. Sadly, the peoples around Mount Kilimanjaro will bear the brunt of a changing climate which they had little to no part in creating but rather was caused by emissions from the developed world.
